As virtual learning has become the ‘norm’ during these unusual times, there’s something to be said for the hands-on experiences for students. Miami-Dade Public School Superintendent Alberto Carvalho recognized the importance of having students serve as interns over the summer, and partnered with some great sponsors who provided funds to pay summer interns to learn new skills. Each intern worked a total of 150 hours over the summer, gaining valuable skills in the industry of their choice. Hopefully, the businesses that were fortunate enough to have a summer intern from this outstanding Miami-Dade County Public Schools program, would hire the students during the school year, as the Aventura Marketing Council/Chamber of Commerce (AMC) did with student Eric Gavizon, a student from MAST at FIU.
“During my summer internship at the Aventura Marketing Council/Chamber of Commerce, I gained valuable experiences and learned many important lessons” said Eric. “At the end of the internship, I was so proud to be hired as an official employee. Working here has truly been one of the best and most enjoyable periods of my life, and I am so glad to work here to become a productive member of my community. Over the last few months, I have had the privilege of being part of something much greater than myself, where I am able to take part in my community and help those around me. Today, I am helping to prepare for events, create databases, and other office essentials. And I could not be happier!”
“Eric proved to be such a valuable addition to our AMC team that we knew we had to keep him onboard. He will be working with the AMC after school and organizing our computer databases, a skill he learned over the summer and became very proficient at, in addition to the many other skills he learned,” said Elaine Adler, AMC President.
