The vivid colors of residents Alan and Susan Shovers’ immense vintage glass collection is not only beautiful and distinctive, but reflect a vibrant and colorful 18-year journey of discovery.
The Shovers, who lived in Indiana and California before relocating to Aventura, own one of the country’s foremost collections of Carder Steuben Glass totaling over 400 stunning pieces. They credit the start of their Carder Steuben glass collection to “luck, timing, and their relationships with dealers and collectors willing to part with a piece or two of their prized collections.”
The glass is designed by British-born artist and co-founder of Steuben Glass Works, Frederick Carder. It has been a long-time passion and fascination for Alan Shovers, who authored and illustrated “Objects of Desire: The Art of Frederick Carder.” The book’s publication was sponsored by the Evansville Museum of Arts, History, and Science as an accompaniment to their 2005 exhibition. Many of the works featured in the book are on display at the University of Southern Indiana.
Susan Shovers is no stranger to hunting and collecting, having developed her own collection of bold, Art Deco creations from French artist Charles Schneider. The Shovers’ at-home “glass museum” features a plethora of unique pieces. From regal goblets to iridescent vases and patterned plates, the glasswork is as captivating as it is diverse.
In 2017, the couple was invited to the Carder Steuben Club 17th Annual Symposium, co-hosted by The Corning Museum of Glass in Corning, NY, for a talk affectionately titled, “Anything You Collect, I Collect Better.”
The Shovers were recently featured as special guests during an art history webinar with FIU’s Osher Lifelong Learning Institute. Susan Shovers is also the host of Vi’s virtual cooking series, “Cooking with Bubbe,” and co-host of the community’s resident talk show, “A La Vie at the Vi.”
“It has been such a pleasure having Mr. and Mrs. Shovers at the Vi. Their vitality and zest for life are a perfect addition to our community,” said Renee Garvin, Executive Director of Vi of Aventura.
