“Excellence in education is when we do everything we can to make sure they become everything they can.” Carol-Ann Thompson
At the recent Awards Assembly of Don Soffer Aventura High School, planned and hosted by Francie Weinberg, the school’s first graduating class won a record-breaking number of awards. And you know that this does not happen by accident. The consensus was unanimous…..it was Principal Dr. Geoff McKee whose vision and hard work, carried out by the administrators, teachers and students that brought about the incredible results.
QUOTE FROM DON SOFFER
Aventura Mayor Howard S. Weinberg, Esq. said, “The outstanding scholastic achievements of our first graduating class has set the standard for the classes that will follow. Although all of us are ecstatic at the results and super proud of the Class of 2023, none of us are surprised. The moniker “The City of Excellence” applies to our youth as well.”
In this first graduating class, there were 182 students. As awards were announced, students with huge smiles on their faces accepted their awards from their Principal Dr. Geoff McKee, Assistant Principal Pamela Clappier and Dean of Curriculum Shaina Hernandez. Awards for Cum Laude, Magna Cum Laude, Summa Cum Laude, Silver Knight Nominees, National Merit Commendations, Principal’s Honor Roll, 999+ hours Community Service Awards, and the Salutatorians and Valedictorian awards filled the entire program. A look at the extremely high number of award recipients will put everything in perspective, and give all of us hope for the future of our country.
According to Dr. McKee, prior to entering 12th grade, 60% of graduating seniors earned an AICE Diploma from the University of Cambridge in England, qualifying these students for the full Bright Futures Scholars Scholarship which provides a stipend for books and covers 100% of tuition at Florida’s public universities, including UF, FSU, FAU and UCF. Prior to entering 12th grade, 5% of graduating seniors earned a College Board AP Capstone diploma, and 117 seniors earned Cum Laude recognition through earning a cumulative weighted GPA of 4.0 or higher.
Here are some of the colleges at which the seniors were accepted: Amherst College, Boston University, Bentley, Carnegie Mellon, Clemson, Duke, Elon, Florida Atlantic University Honors Program, Florida State University Honors Program, Fordham, Indiana University, Johns Hopkins University, New College of Florida, Northwestern, Penn State, Rutgers, Southern Methodist University, Tulane, University of Florida Honors Program, University of Miami, University of Michigan, University of North Carolina, University of Southern California, University of Texas (Austin), University of Virginia, Virginia Tech, Wake Forest, and Washington University.
