On a recent adventure to Barcelona, I set out to experience more than the postcard-perfect sights. I wanted to understand the soul of the city—the layers of history tucked behind its grand façades and cobblestone alleys. That’s how I found myself stepping into the past on a Jewish Quarter and Gothic tour with Barcelona Dreaming, and what unfolded was nothing short of magical.
The experience began in the heart of the Jewish Quarter, where ancient stones whisper
stories to those who pause to listen. Led by our passionate guide Eyal, a recent transplant from Israel, we wandered through narrow alleyways where mezuzahs once graced doorposts and community life flourished. Eyal’s knowledge was deep, his storytelling vivid. With every corner we turned, Barcelona’s hidden Jewish heritage came alive.
One of the most unforgettable moments came inside a humble-looking shop. Beneath the floorboards, now covered with rugs and store merchandise, revealed like a long-lost secret, was an original mikveh (ritual bath), remarkably preserved through centuries of silence. We sipped local wine in a cozy back room of a Judaica shop El Call Judaica with shop owner Dani chatting about history, resilience, and the rebirth of identity. It wasn’t just a tour—it was a journey through memory and meaning.
At the heart of this experience is Michal Shauer, founder of Barcelona Dreaming, whose warmth and enthusiasm set the tone for every step. Her vision is clear: to create encounters that are real, personal, and rooted in the city’s authentic stories. “For us, the Jewish story of Barcelona isn’t just history – it’s identity, resilience, and beauty. We see it in the streets every day, and we love sharing it with visitors in a way that’s real, local, and inspiring.”
