Inaugural design and build competition will feature innovative homes and play stations for pets; displays to be showcased at Aventura Mall in November
Aventura Mall is partnering with The Miami Center for Architecture & Design (MCAD) and Humane Society of Greater Miami to host the inaugural “PAWchitecture” design and build competition. Entrants, which include renowned architecture and design firms, will compete to create the most innovative homes and play stations for dogs and cats.
The fundraising competition will culminate in November with displays showcased throughout Aventura Mall. Each submission will be auctioned to the public at the shopping center and online, with proceeds directly benefiting the Humane Society of Greater Miami and MCAD.
Modeled after similar successful events throughout the U.S., PAWchitecture offers architecture and design professionals – as well as students – an opportunity to demonstrate their skills while giving back to the South Florida community.
The competition is a natural fit for host Aventura Mall, which is recognized as a destination for world-class architecture, design and art. Additionally, the shopping center has a long-term relationship with Humane Society of Greater Miami, for which it has helped facilitate countless adoptions.
“Several lucky South Floridians will take home these spectacular, interactive designs by award-winning firms – but no one will enjoy them quite as much as the dogs and cats,” said Jossie Aguirre, Interim Executive Director for The Humane Society of Greater Miami.
“PAWchitecture is creating engaging and cozy environments for loving pets in need. We’re humbled to be beneficiaries of these firms’ designs and grateful to Aventura Mall and MCAD for their partnership.”
Some of the incredible PAWchitecture designs include “Bone Baywatch,” a lifeguard station-inspired design with dog toys incorporated throughout; “Copa Cat-bana,” which includes a moss wall, playful elevation and natural, warm materials; “The ‘A’ Frame Tiny Luxury Pooch House” with energy-efficient thermal insulation, a dark wooden frame and light-filtering acrylic; and the “Cafetera Dog House,” a nod to Miami’s “Cafecito” culture and art deco aesthetic.
PAWchitecture winners will be selected across several categories, including Big Woof, Tiny Barker, and Cat Condo.
“It’s an honor to partner with Aventura Mall, Humane Society of Greater Miami, and over a dozen top global, national and Miami-based firms for the inaugural PAWchitecture project,” said Cheryl Jacobs, executive vice president for Miami Center for Architecture & Design.
“These architecture and design teams have already enhanced Miami’s infrastructure and the overall lifestyle. Now, they’ll extend their talents to improve the lives of vulnerable dogs and cats being cared for by The Humane Society of Greater Miami. It’s a fun and impactful project, and we can’t wait to see what they create.”
In addition to a student entry, the following 16 firms are participating: 89th Place Studio; AECOM (partnering with Design & Architecture Senior High); BMA Architects;Digital Architecture and Future Technology (DAFT) Buro; Moonlighter Fablab (includes DASH student entry); Gensler; Gresham Smith; Kobi Karp Architecture; MCHarry Associates; Miami-Dade College/Homeschool Student; Neuvio Architects; Nichols Architects; Perkins & Will; Savino Miller Design Studio; Stantec and Studio Mc+G Architecture.
