You surely have heard the name of Billy Joel. And we’re not talking about the singer Billy Joel, but our own Aventura Billy Joel, whose big heart and good deeds have spanned the world. From buying specially-equipped boats for disabled youngsters so they could know the freedom on the water that they don’t have on land, to the scholarship funds he raised for college students who are the first in their family to attend college, to a school in New York for disabled children and a center in Israel for disabled children to buying an ambulance for the IDF in Israel, the list goes on and on.
Barry University’s President, Dr. Michael Allen and Provost Dr. Pablo Ortiz wanted to recognize this incredible gentleman for his “….remarkable contributions to philanthropy, community service and education.” And what better way to honor Billy than to present him with an Honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters degree at the university’s Doctoral Commencement Ceremonies on Friday, May 9th at 9:30am
Billy Joel said, “I am very honored and filled with gratitude to receive this recognition. This honor belongs equally to every youngster who rose above their challenges, to every teacher and healthcare professional who joined this mission and to everyone in the military who fights to save our freedoms. This recognition exceeds my expectations, and I hope it will encourage even greater efforts from others to create positive changes in this world of ours.”
Dr. Allen said, “ Each year at our commencement, I urge our graduates to tackle tomorrow’s problems today. Billy and Sandra Joel exemplify this charge in all that they do.
Their generosity, leadership, and dedication to solving our community’s most challenging issues are inspiring. We are delighted to recognize Billy with an honorary doctorate degree from Barry University. “
“Having witnessed Billy Joel’s impact firsthand, I’ve seen how his generosity and commitment to education have transformed countless young lives. His tireless support for special needs communities and underserved students has opened doors and inspired hope.
Barry University is proud to honor his legacy with an Honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters.” added Dr. Ortiz.
