Students with the Broward Green Schools Campaign spent months organizing and advocating for the Broward County School Board to pass a resolution in support of their campaign for 100% clean energy in the district.
Today the Broward County School Board voted unanimously to pass a resolution in support of Broward County Public Schools transitioning to 100% clean energy. This bold move marks continued progress towards making Broward County a leader in Florida for sustainable and healthy learning environments for all students, setting a precedent for future districts to follow.
The resolution comes after months of advocacy led by high school students who want Broward County Public Schools to take stronger initiative to mitigate and adapt to climate change. Climate disasters, such as hurricanes, are hitting more frequently in South Florida and causing learning disruptions. For example, Hurricane Milton and Helene recently caused multiple missed school days. Now, students in Broward County know the time is now for schools to take seriously the threats posed by climate change and transition to clean energy for more resilient and sustainable buildings. While giving public comment at Tuesday’s board meeting, Anagha Iyer, a student leader with the Broward Green Schools Campaign, said, “this has been an entirely student led campaign so seeing our ideas and hopes into fruition has been very exciting.”
Broward County Public Schools is the sixth largest school district in the United States, serving 250,000 students. A district-wide transition to clean energy would not only play a significant role in reducing greenhouse gas emissions and improving indoor air quality for students, but also help these schools save big on energy costs.
“I’m very excited for the future. We talked about this before: making our buildings with clean energy so I am very proud to bring the resolution forward and I hope my colleagues will join me in supporting this,”said newly elected school board Chair Debbi Hixon, who introduced the resolution at Tuesday’s board meeting.
“These students exemplify the future. It’s their environment and it’s their health,” said Broward Green Schools Campaign member, Julie Long “and this resolution is only the first step in a much larger movement.”
The Broward County School Board will continue to work closely with students, teachers, and other community members with the Broward Green Schools Campaign to ensure this resolution results in real climate action throughout the district. Read the full resolution here.
