On Tuesday, November 1st, the Glenn Hubert Library on FIU’s Biscayne Bay Campus hosted the opening reception of the Clyde Butcher Photography Exhibit “Cuba: The Natural Beauty”; the opening reception included a book signing and talk by the artist.
“Cuba: The Natural Beauty” explores the dramatic vistas and wonders of the mountains and coastlines of the island, and was created in conjunction with the United Nations Conference for the Sustainable Habitat of the Mountains. The UNESO Conference and Butcher’s three-week tour focused on expanding communication between the two countries on environmental issues, and his powerful black and white photographs reveal the unique beauty of the Cuban landscape, especially areas not often visited by tourists.
Butcher used large format cameras with 8”x 10,” 11”x 14,” and 12”x 20” negatives. The technique allows for elaborate detail, textures and tonality that distinguish the intricacy of the Cuban landscape.
The exhibit at FIU includes 26 photographs ranging in size from 16″x20″ to 4×7 feet, with large format photos of the Sierra Maestra Mountains in Cuba’s eastern province of Granma, the south coast of Cuba between Manzananilo and Santiago de Cuba, Baracoa, and the waterfalls of the Serra de San Juan and the region of Pina del Rio.
The photography exhibit will be at the Hubert Library on the Biscayne Bay Campus until February 28th, 2017.
