When Aventura Commissioner Michael Stern was diagnosed with colon cancer, his life completely changed. With a strong and courageous spirit, and the support of his family and friends, he continues to fight back. Michael decided he was going to devote his energies to help others learn the signs, symptoms and preventative strategies that could save lives. He soon became a National Ambassador for Fight Colorectal Cancer and spoke to many local Mayors about proclaiming a day to recognize the need for screenings, and so far about half of the cities in Miami-Dade county did proclaim a day in recognition of Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month.
When United States Congresswoman Frederica S. Wilson heard about Michael’s efforts to save lives and his journey dealing with colon cancer, she invited him to Washington, D.C. to participate in a Congressional briefing panel in partnership with Howard University on health disparities among black men and boys. Panelists included Congressional Black Caucus Chairman Steven Horsford, Men’s Caucus and Colorectal Cancer Prevention Caucus Chairman Donald Payne; Dr. Andrea Hayes Dixon, Dean, Howard University College of Medicine; Dr. Derrick Griffith, Georgetown University and others. “It was such an honor to be asked to participate,” said Michael. “It was an incredible opportunity to bring more awareness to so many more people.” At the end of an extremely full day at the Capitol, Michael was presented with a Certificate of Special Congressional Recognition for “outstanding and invaluable service to the community”.
“What I witnessed, but already knew about Congresswoman Wilson, was the passion she brings when she feels strongly about something. It’s inspiring. She speaks from her heart and is an incredible role model for so many people. It starts with the people she surrounds herself with. The staff in both her South Florida and Washington offices have been amazing to work with”.
Congresswoman Wilson and Commissioner Stern are teaming up again for a local event in South Florida on Tuesday, August 15th, 11am – 1 pm at the Barbara J. Jordan Community Health & Wellness Center, 20612 NW 27th Avenue, Miami Gardens 33056. RSVP to Sandy.Sears@mail.house.gov
