Florida Power & Light Company is committed to delivering reliable electricity from a diverse energy mix to its customers, while keeping bills as low as possible. FPL believes in powering strong communities, making Florida an even better place to live, work and raise a family. For FPL, part of supporting communities is helping to ensure that customers are ready for severe weather events.
For nearly a decade, FPL has been partnering with local nonprofit organizations to help thousands of seniors prepare for storm season. Last year the company partnered with the Florida Council on Aging, its local partner agencies and other organizations to provide hurricane preparedness meal kits to vulnerable seniors, like those that are homebound.
More than 10,000 seniors in communities across Florida benefited from this program, including hundreds in South Florida. More than 28,000 hurricane preparedness meal kits were distributed, helping customers prepare for storm season.
FPL has a storm plan – and encourages its customers to be prepared, too. With hurricane season top of mind, here are some storm preparedness tips:
• Do not attempt to trim any vegetation growing on or near power lines.
• If you’re using a generator, read and follow the manufacturer’s instructions. Set it up outside – not in your home or garage or near an open window – and connect all appliances directly to it.
• Call 911 immediately to report dangerous or hazardous conditions.
• Stay far away from downed power lines and flooded areas.
• After a storm passes – make the safety of your family and home your top priority.
Customers are encouraged to use the FPL Mobile App or call FPL at 800-4-OUTAGE to report downed power lines or damage to FPL lines, poles or transformers.
