Most adults now anticipate living decades beyond retirement. In fact, the World Health Organization states that by 2050, the population of people aged 60 and over will double to 2.1B. These statistics highlight one of the most significant demographic shifts in human history.
Vi at Aventura resident and vibrant octogenarian, Dr. Barbara Corkey, 85, Emeritus Professor of Medicine and Biochemistry at Boston University School of Medicine, believes that a longer life doesn’t necessarily mean a healthier life. As a leading expert in diabetes and obesity research, she dedicates her life to educating others on the science of metabolic health and disease prevention.
September marks Healthy Aging Month, a timely reminder to prioritize health and wellness, especially as the new year approaches. In today’s information-saturated world, distinguishing fact from fiction can be challenging. Dr. Corkey will help make sense of it all as Vi at Aventura hosts its 6-part series, “Metabolic Mastermind.” The series begins on September 27 and will take place on the last Wednesday of each month through February, excluding January.
Here, she debunks five metabolic health myths, grounding her insights in science:
Myth #1: Fats Are Bad
Contrary to popular belief, not all fats are bad. Foods like avocados, olives, walnuts and salmon are a great source of essential fatty acids which support heart health, brain function and inflammation reduction.
Myth #2: The Body Needs Carbs
Our bodies have mechanisms to produce the glucose it needs, even without giving it carbs. However, for individuals with conditions such as diabetes, carb intake and management become essential for maintaining blood sugar levels.
Myth #3: Dairy is Bad
Milk, cheese and yogurt are rich in calcium, which are vital for bone health and maintenance as well as muscle repair and growth. If there is no intolerance to lactose, dairy can provide a wealth of nutrients.
Myth #4: Wine Contains Too Much Sugar
While wine does have sugar, the amounts might be less than what one would assume, especially when compared to everyday foods like potatoes or white bread.
Myth #5: Weight Loss is Just “Calories In, Calories Out”
It’s a common misconception that simply following the ‘calories in, calories out” principle guarantees weight loss. Consuming fewer calories can lead to energy conservation, while increased intake can result in heightened energy burn.
