When 9-year-old Tenzin was diagnosed with ALL, his family’s world felt like it turned upside down. Everything changed. Suddenly, carefree days filled with school and video games were filled with doctor visits, harsh treatments, and hospitalizations. Tenzin’s mother, Coleen, could no longer go to work because she needed to stay home to take care of him.
According to Stacey Levy, Founder and CEO of Ellie’s Army, Tenzin’s circumstances are not unusual. “For many reasons, families of critically ill children face tremendous financial difficulties.” Stacey’s daughter, Ellie, the foundation’s namesake, battled cystic fibrosis, a genetic terminal disease that primarily affects the lungs. “I know the emotional toll that it takes to have a sick child. The idea that a family cannot afford their most basic living expenses and cannot give their children what they need to stay as healthy as possible is unfathomable.”
Tenzin’s family was about to be evicted from their home when they came to Ellie’s Army for help. The foundation paid their past due rent plus two additional months so that they could get back on their feet while Coleen awaited social security payments and other assistance for Tenzin. Eventually, she will return to work. According to Stacey, “This is only possible because of our donors. I believe that this is the beauty of our community. Together, we were able to change the future for this family and others who come to us during the most difficult times in their lives.”
