Senator Lauren Book recently won re-election to the Florida Senate by more than 20 points, and addressed her supporters and the media by saying, “Fighting for South Florida families in Tallahassee has been the honor of a lifetime and I am grateful to have earned the trust of my constituents. This upcoming session, I will lead the Florida Senate Democrats to continue the fight to defend the things that unite us as neighbors, as Floridians, as Americans, and human beings — things like access to high-quality, affordable healthcare, keeping our buildings and the people who live in them safe, combating gun violence, lowering costs and promoting economic policies that give everyone a chance to get ahead. “
As a survivor of childhood sexual abuse, Sen. Book knows what it’s like to feel that you don’t have a voice, or that your voice doesn’t matter. She suffered in silence for years, and now she has made it her mission to ensure other marginalized voices are heard in the halls of power. From expanding Medicaid twice for new moms and vulnerable babies to passing a diaper tax break for families in need, laws to keep kids safe from abuse, or working to make sure first responders get the mental health care they deserve, she is proud of the work she’s accomplished over the last six years. She added, “I look forward to continuing this journey of advocacy and service to make South Florida and the Sunshine State the best possible place to live, work, and play.“
