Aventura Marketing Council/Chamber of Commerce meeting showcased students from ten schools with Superintendent Dotres as guest speaker
This wasn’t the first Student-Run Breakfast Meeting of the Aventura Marketing Council/Chamber of Commerce (AMC)….but it just may have been the most inspiring and emotional Student-Run Meeting in the 32-year history of the organization.
Many months ago, when Sandra Severe, CEO of Jackson North Medical Center, joined the AMC Board of Directors, she asked an important question: “Which meeting would be best for my hospital to sponsor?”. After hearing the options, there was no doubt—it would be the annual Student-Run Breakfast Meeting in May where students from the AMC’s ten partner schools would run the entire meeting. Why? Because Jackson North was launching their Pediatrics Unit . Severe spoke from the heart about her outstanding team of physicians, nurses, staff and administrators who are bringing acclaim to Jackson North, adding “To the principals, teachers, parents, and caregivers in the room– thank you for your dedication and commitment to these beautiful young people. It is impressive to hear about their hopes and dreams, and how they plan to thrive and contribute to our society. The professionalism and poise they demonstrated today is just the beginning of a journey that we must continue to encourage and nurture. Continue to pour into them as you have so magnificently done.”
Superintendent Dr. Jose Dotres said that this meeting is one of his favorite meetings of the year because it focuses on the students….a feeling matched by the full-house audience. “As a parent myself and lifelong educator, it gives me such pride and confidence in the future when I see these young people take charge and shine,” said Superintendent Dotres. “We appreciate the support of Aventura Marketing Council members who serve as mentors and provide student internships. They are an outstanding partner providing genuine support to our students.”
The Student Leaders had multiple rehearsals before taking the podium, and their hard work and diligence paid off beautifully! As each one approached the podium, they spoke with confidence, emotion and with a smile in their voice. The Student Leaders were: Isabella Suels, 12th grade, Alonzo and Tracy Mourning Sr. High; Sofia Melnitzky, 7th grade, Aventura City of Excellence School; Mikhail Nantambu, 6th grade, Aventura Waterways Preparatory Academy; Jordan Allen, 4th grade, David Lawrence, Jr. K-8; Sofia Edelberg, 12th grade, Don Soffer Aventura High School; David Bradwell, 11th grade, Grace Leadership Preparatory Academy; Talia Robbins, 11th grade, Dr. Michael M. Krop Senior High; Sebastian Suels, 8th grade, Norman S. Edelcup Sunny Isles Beach K-8; Alysha Magloire, 11th grade, North Miami Beach Senior High; and Jeremiah King, 2nd grade, Sunshine State Academy. The principals, teachers and family members in the audience were beaming with pride alongside AMC members. And when it came time for the traditional closing poem where the students thanked their parents, there were more than a few people wiping away tears.
Students from the ten schools were also serving as Student Ambassadors, giving every arriving guest a warm welcome greeting. Among the many special guests were Aventura Mayor Howard S. Weinberg, Sunny Isles Beach Mayor Larisa Svechin and El Portal Mayor Omarr Nickerson. Aventura Vice Mayor Amit Bloom and Commissioners Billy Joel, Dr. Linda Marks, Michael Stern, Rachel Friedland and Paul Kruss were there as well as Deputy City Manager Bryan Pegues and Police Chief Michael Bentolila. The City of Sunny Isles Beach had Vice Mayor Jerry Joseph, Commissioner Fabiola Stuyvesant and Deputy City Manager Susan Simpson there. Miami-Dade County Public Schools was well represented by Tabatha Fazzino and Lisa Thurber, as their Office of Economic Opportunity, Jennifer Andreu, Junior Anderson and Aileen Neri, distributed gifts to the Student Leaders and Chick-fil-A Aventura gave the Students Leaders a gift certificate.
