Hundreds of high school students to gather for an empowering program led by high-profile panelists

The University of Miami Sports Medicine Institute will host their 14th Annual Student Leadership Day on Friday June 23rd from 8a.m. to 3p.m. at the University of Miami’s Watsco Center. This day aims to empower high school students from across Miami-Dade and Broward counties by teaching them skills that will enhance their ability to serve as role models in their schools and communities.

Filled with workshops, group activities, and inspiring high-profile speakers, Student Leadership Day encourages students to improve their communication skills, to interact with others from different schools and backgrounds, and to never take no for an answer when someone suggests they cannot pursue their dream.

Student Leadership Day was founded by Dr. Lee Kaplan, director of the University of Miami Sports Medicine Institute and Vinny Scavo, associate athletic director for Athletic Training at the University of Miami, in 2009 when two students from two Miami high schools were meeting with college recruits for football.

“One of them one day doesn’t show up for an appointment, and it turns out he got arrested for having guns in his car,” said Dr. Kaplan. “Two days later, we had another student athlete arrested for dealing.”

Together with Scavo, Dr. Kaplan decided instead of just helping those students, they would go ‘top-down.’ So, they launched the Student Leadership Program and recruited some of the most inspiring figures in South Florida to have an opportunity to connect directly with students.

When students enroll in Student Leadership Day, they will experience keynote presentations and panel discussion, featuring professional athletes, head coaches, and accomplished community leaders who share their views and advice on the qualities of good leadership and how to develop leadership skills. The goal of the programming is to provide students with fresh perspectives and expanded tools to define their own goals, overcome obstacles, and develop resiliency.

“We want students to think deeply about their choices so that they can make good choices.

During Student Leadership Day, we teach them how,” said Dr. Kaplan. “Our goal is to teach students how to become better leaders within their networks and communities, and to give them tools to accomplish their goals.”

Students receive community service hours and a certificate for attending. For more information or to register for the Student Leadership Day 2023, visit umiamihealth.org/SLD.
