From living in the Amityville Horror House to owning NASCAR’s #1 small racetrack in the country with her husband, Jim, Barbara Cromarty has experienced more adventure than most adults can even dream up. But it was not until her recent move to Vi at Aventura where Barbara discovered her new passion: poetry.
With nine little ducklings outside her window as her muse, and insomnia as her impetus, Barbara, 88, began writing poetry for the first time in 2020. She started the process slowly, crafting her work while others were asleep, and, before long, it became a nightly ritual. Dubbed “The Midnight Poet” by her fellow residents, Barbara has published four books and hosts poetry nights at the Vi, where she encourages others to share their creative prose.
Whether a haiku, idiom or ode, it is the creative outlet that she loves most. She has over 200 poems in her repertoire and derives inspiration from her new friends and daily life at the Vi.
“Poetry keeps my mind sharp and has made me look at my surroundings with a different perspective,” said Cromarty. “This has been an unexpected source of joy for me.”
Entertaining others has always been a part of Barbara’s life. She and Jim, 90, have operated racetracks, skating rinks, county fairs and car shows for more than 40 years.
Now, in addition to sharing her poetry, Barbara enjoys cheerleading along with her fellow members of the Viva Girls, the community’s resident cheer group. The couple also joined Vi’s choral group, The Choraleers, and Barbara even wrote the theme song to the community’s in-house talk show.
