The Miami Trash Crisis – The Virginia Key Island Challenge

This past weekend, the Virginia Key Outdoor Center organized the first annual Virginia Key Island Challenge. A Collaborative Island-Wide Clean-Up Initiative that sought to assess the marine debris situation on Virginia Key post 4th of July Weekend. Four Clean-Ups occurred simultaneously around Virginia Key on July 10th at Marine Stadium, Virginia Key North Point Park (VKOC), The Historic Virginia Key Beach Park, and Hobbie Beach. Over 300 Residents attended the Clean Ups and collected over 1,500 pounds of trash in 2 hours.

The Virginia Key Outdoor Center (VKOC) is a social enterprise/family business that operates with ecologically sound policies and seeks to provide educational opportunities. VKOC offers daily rentals, tours, and more. Monthly Clean-Ups occur the first Saturday of each month and are meant to connect residents to the harsh reality of plastic pollution that Biscayne Bay is facing.

This time around, the Virginia Key Outdoor Center sought to unite forces with partner organizations such as Fill A Bag, Debris Free Oceans, Off The Hook Florida, the Historic Virginia Key Beach Trust and Park, Send It 4 The Sea, and Clean This Beach Up to spread further awareness on the trash pandemic and severity of it a post-independence day. The

Virginia Key Outdoor Center was joined by the University of Miami’s Football Team to clean up Virginia Key and continue to provide a place where nature and the city meet for both

residents and tourists alike. Can’t make it to VKOC’s monthly Saturday Clean Ups? Check out Volunteer Clean Up for dozens of local clean ups around the Greater Miami Area
