MCCJ, the non-profit organization known for embracing diversity, has announced that this year’s recipient of the Hank Meyer National Headliner Award is Joshua Johnson, host of 1A on WAMU and NPR.
Johnson will receive the prestigious award during a breakfast attended by South Florida civic and community leaders as well as students from area high schools. The event is on Tuesday, Apr. 24, 8:30-10:30 a.m., at the Rusty Pelican, 3201 Rickenbacker Causeway on Virginia Key.
Tickets are $45 per person and table sponsorships are $500, which includes a table for 10.
The Hank Meyer Award goes to journalists who mirror MCCJ’s mission of creating an inclusive community. Past honorees of this award include Walter Cronkite, Dan Rather, Barbara Walters, Tom Brokaw, Leonard Pitts Jr., ABC’s John Quiñones, Meet the Press moderator Chuck Todd, and New York Times columnist Charles M. Blow.
As an active member of the National Association of Black Journalists and the National Lesbian and Gay Journalists Association, Johnson has addressed diversity on 1A, while tackling the tough issues including the current administration’s travel ban and The Dream Act.
Launched at a tumultuous time for news and inspired by the First Amendment, Johnson and 1A bring new insight and inquiry to the most pressing issues in America.
