Miami Dade College (MDC) Wolfson Campus student Melisa Seda has been named to the 2014 Coca-Cola Community College Academic Team. She is among only seven students selected from the Florida College System this year to receive a Coca-Cola scholarship.

The Coca-Cola Community College Academic Team is selected annually to recognize high-achieving college students who demonstrate academic excellence combined with leadership skills and service projects that extend their education beyond the classroom.

With a cumulative grade point average of 3.92, Seda actively is engaged in organizations such as Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society, Rotaract, and the National Honors Society of Leadership and Success. She is a multiple Dean’s List recipient and volunteers her time to package meals for the homeless through local organizations.

The MDC American Dream Scholar, who attends the college full-time, is also a caregiver for her mother and works two jobs to help sustain her family. Seda said her relationship with her younger brother, who is autistic, has inspired and motivated her to one day open a holistic mental health center and conduct research on autism and Alzheimer’s disease.

In addition, 14 MDC students representing seven campuses were named to the Florida College System’s 2014 All-Florida Academic team, which recognizes outstanding students for their academic achievement, leadership and service to the community. Students were nominated to the All-USA Academic Team competition sponsored by USA Today and the Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) International Honor Society. They were honored at a ceremony on Apr. 24 in Orlando.
