While Mercy Hospital’s medical teams continue to be on the frontlines of the pandemic, they haven’t lost sight of the importance of supporting our community, especially during back-to-school time.

The mission was Operation Backpack, and the response from Mercy Hospital colleagues was simply overwhelming. The initial goal was to collect 150 supply-filled backpacks, and the departments rallied together to support and provide more than 200 backpacks.

From the collection, Mercy Hospital was able to provide backpacks for colleagues and children at both Sagrada Familia Child Development Center and St. Michael the Archangel Church.

“The amount of giving was inspiring. Our teams showed tremendous care, and it is a prime example of people helping people,” said Barbara Maione, Clinical Nutrition manager and chair of Mercy Hospital’s Employee Activity Group (EAG). “Our effort was two-fold. We wanted to help those within our Mercy family and also in our community.

“We know people in our organization might be silently struggling, and after we ensure they have what they need, we will partner with local schools and donate the remaining backpacks. There are a lot of families, who because of the pandemic, are struggling now.

We hope that we can provide some relief,” Maione added.
