Miami-Dade County Parks, Recreation and Open Spaces Department (PROS) is conducting a park needs assessment through a series of public meetings and survey. This is part of the department’s continuous efforts to provide improved services to residents.
The meetings will take place across the county, and members of the public are welcome at all meetings where they will have the opportunity to provide feedback, ask questions and voice their opinions.
“Parks are key to building a healthier community and environment for everyone,” said Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava. “We are the nation’s third largest county parks system, and as our community grows, we need to continuously improve our parks and green spaces too. Your input is essential to help is grow our treasured spaces for people to socialize, participate in recreational activities, and enjoy the beautiful natural environment around them.”
To address park system-wide needs throughout our county, public outreach were to be conducted at all 13 commission districts. Over the next few weeks, Miami-Dade County residents will have opportunities to join an in-person event, where they can meet with department representatives and share their ideas, priorities, and needs related to parks, recreation, and park programming by attending one of the seven remaining meetings.
“Parks are for everyone!” said Maria I. Nardi, Miami-Dade County Parks, Recreation and Open Spaces director. “Our needs assessment survey and listening sessions are important civic engagement tools that are vital to the development of the Miami-Dade County Parks system. They ensure that our park system meets current and future community needs.”
Meeting outcomes will contribute to the continuation of building a healthier, more aesthetically pleasing, vibrant community, through the implementation of the Miami-Dade County Parks and Open Spaces Master Plan. The information provided will help guide future park and recreation needs and programming, as well as continue to develop the parks system guided by principles of equity, access, beauty, seamlessness, sustainability, and multiple benefits.
Residents are encouraged to share their perspective through an interactive activity and leave comments, in addition to taking the online survey at http://www.miamidade.gov/parkneeds. Input gathered from the public meeting and survey will help establish priorities for future capital development of parks and recreation facilities, programs, and services.
During the meetings of early 2024, residents shared comments that align with the following themes:
• Benefits of parks
• Services at parks
• Types of park programming
• Types of park facilities
• Barriers to park access
