Sailors are some of the most highly trained people on the planet, according to Navy officials, and this training requires highly dedicated instructors.
At Naval Technical Training Center (NTTC) Meridian, instructors teach sailors to be combat-ready warfighters, while providing the tools and opportunities for continuous learning and development.
Seaman Apprentice Patrick Augustave, a native of Miami, is a student at NTTC Meridian, learning the necessary skills needed to be a yeoman.
“As a yeoman, I will be responsible for various filing correspondence, reports and financials for my sailors,” Augustave said.
Augustave, a 2023 graduate of Alonzo and Tracy Mourning High School, joined the Navy less than a year ago.
“I joined the Navy because I wanted a way to pay for college,” Augustave said. “I wanted to feel like I was doing something with my life.”
Augustave relies upon skills and values similar to those found in Miami to succeed in the military.
“Growing up, I learned to have a hard work ethic from my family and peers, and to work hard before I relaxed,” Augustave said. “This was the mindset I kept with me throughout boot camp and this helped me get through all the hardships I faced.”
NTTC Meridian, located at Naval Air Station Meridian, MS, is committed to developing dedicated and motivated sailors and Marines. Following boot camp, they provide entry-level “A” school training to students in administration and supply ratings.
NTTC Meridian is one of the more than 1,640 subordinate learning sites that serve as a part of the Naval Education and Training Command (NETC) domain. NETC educates and trains those who serve, providing the tools and opportunities that enable lifelong learning, professional and personal growth and development, ensuring fleet readiness and mission accomplishment.
With 90 percent of global commerce traveling by sea and access to the internet relying on the security of undersea fiber optic cables, Navy officials continue to emphasize that the prosperity of the United States is directly linked to trained sailors and a strong Navy.
Serving in the Navy means Augustave is part of a team that is taking on new importance in America’s focus on rebuilding military readiness, strengthening alliances and reforming business practices in support of the National Defense Strategy.
“The Marines and Army fight on land, but it’s the Navy that protects our seas and delivers the resources and manpower needed for our nation’s defense,” Augustave said.
Augustave has many opportunities to achieve accomplishments during military service.
“I’m most proud of completing boot camp,” Augustave said. “This was a testament to all my hard work and perseverance paying off in the end.”
As he and other sailors continue to perform missions, they take pride in serving their country in the United States Navy.
“To serve means to do your job both honorably and professionally,” Augustave said.
He is grateful to others for helping make a Navy career possible.
“I’d like to thank my high school Navy Junior ROTC instructor, Chief Jamal Gibson, for motivating and inspiring me to join the Navy,” Augustave said.
He has goals in the Navy and beyond.
“I’m currently working towards being the best I can be in my rate and building up my photography business,” Augustave added.
