The Nu Deco Ensemble will be performing Mar. 29 and 30 at the New World Center on Miami Beach.
In its fourth season, this talented group of classically trained musicians shows that they have the flexibility and versatility to perform the wide range of music found in many of their programs. Also, they combine diverse genres to create something completely new, vibrant and their own.
In December, they performed at the Adrienne Arsht Center where they played tribute to Aretha Franklin. At that show, they went from Respect made popular by Franklin to Somewhere from West Side Story.
Then, in February of this year, they switched to Cuban beats when they played Global Cuba Fest 2019 along with Yusa and
Joachim Horsley.
For this show, they will morph again and play a suite of songs by The Police and Sting. They also will feature some decidedly eclectic talents.
Among them are Magda Giannikou who can sing in French. She has a wispy coquettish voice that is airy and soft.
The Nu Deco Ensemble also will perform with Ricardo Romaneiro. He also specializes in diverse music styles. He has played Ambient with Liquid Light Lab and for this performance he will create an “immersive installation piece.” This is a combination of light and sound. The lights may match what the conductor is doing physically.
The Tune-Yards also will join the ensemble.
The Nu Deco Ensemble is a project under the joint artistic direction of Jacomo Bairos and Sam Hyken. They have been referred to by the New York Times as the “chamber orchestra for the 21st Century.”
“[We] are both very excited for this performance,” Hyken said. “It is our second year of commissioning new music at New World Center, after our initial commission of Kishi Bashi’s Improvisations on EO9066 in 2018. The new works with Magda Giannikou and Ricardo Romaneiro, mixed with the inventive and imaginative styles of Tune-Yards, make this performance very diverse and exciting.”
Tickets should be purchased from the New World Center by phone at 305-673-3331.
