Toy drives, festival events and parties are abundant this time of year. Belinda and Scott Sime held their amazing toy drive party on December 9, collecting several hundred of toys for Lighthouse for the Blind and other charities while the Coral Gables Woman’s Club has collected Target gift cards, not toys, for the children they treat in the club’s free children’s dental clinic. The Coral Gables Bar and Rotary Club collected toys at their monthly mixer on December 13, at Wealth Management of Coral Gables for the Family Resource Center as well and that is just the tip of the iceberg for this South Florida community whose generosity knows no bounds.
On December 7, Profit Inc., one of the oldest business groups in South Florida, had a busy day with a holiday lunch at 94th Aero Squadron followed by a festive party that night at Keyes Realty’s newly renovated building on Le Jeune Rd. hosted by Profit member Carmen Siman and Carlos Villanueva. Among the many attending both events were Carlos Ribero, Janier Fernandez, LaWanda Loftus, Will Blanco, Cesar Hoed De Beche DC, Mike Sutta, Don and Maria Van Orsdel, Dr. Joe Briggle, Felipe Isaza, Vicente Cruz and Thomas Avila.
Lots of festival and charity events are ongoing this month. The Junior Orange Bowl (JOB) is in full swing with the parade held December 10 in Coral Gables followed by the International Tennis Tournament, from December 12-21, 2023, drawing players from all over the world competing for the championships. Meantime, coming up next week, the Jr. Orange Bowl’s Basketball Tournament has boys’ and girls’ teams coming to vie for JOB Basketball Tournament Title. Chuck Little, JOB Basketball Committee Chair, was a recent guest on my Gloria’s Gab LIVE show to talk about the tournament to be held at Westminster Christian School December 28 – 30. Chuck has seven South Florida girls’ and boys’ teams participating with six competitive out of state girls and boys basketball teams and another from Tampa. On December 28, one girls’ team and one boys’ team coming from out-of-state will play late in day to take the morning to visit the WOW Center for a clinic and chance to play with the adults there. Always a rewarding and fun morning, this annual visit is a great community service component that adds value to the teams’ trip to South Florida.
By the way, the Junior Orange Festival is far from over. In fact, coming up in January and beyond are several more events including the renowned JOB Golf Invitational running from January 2 – 6, 2024, at The Biltmore Golf Course. Also, coming up in 2024. mark your calendars for one of the most fun, irreverent and crazy parades on the year, The King Mango Strut Parade, on January 7, 2024.
