Every school, youth sports team, and charity around is always looking for ways to raise funds. For those who have considered a walk or run, it becomes apparent there is a risk because of the high production costs. Having faced this issue herself as an events’ producer, Marly Quincoces (aka Marly Q) has come up with a great opportunity for non-profits and schools. Marly has planned a 5K Walk and festival event to be held Sunday, November 2, that can benefit any non profit wanting to participate. While many charitable groups will be gathering to sign up on Oct. 14 at Fit2Run in Dadeland Mall from 6 – 8 p.m., others may register online at www.5Kparkfest.org. Once a non-profit has registered, all the money collected from registrants under their charity will be split. That means, for every $40 registration fee, the charity will receive half with the other half directed to producing the event and Marly’s charity, the PARK Project Foundation.
Looking to clean out your closets for the holidays? If so, join the folks at the Coral Gables Woman’s Clubhouse, 1009 East Ponce de Leon Blvd, for an indoor air conditioned garage sale on Saturday, Oct. 25, from 9 a.m. – 2 p.m. For a small price, the public is invited to reserve a table by calling Susie Tilson at 305 720-5181. Tilson recently returned with several other club members, Mayra Dominguez, Linda Hartwell, Ruth Martinez and Debi Moore, from the Florida Federation of Women’s Club Fall Board. While there, the group traveled to the CCI training center for a day of service where they volunteered their time and were also afforded the chance to meet with the recipients of several of the dogs and pet the puppies.
Speaking of the CGWC, the club’s Conservation Chair Margie Shanti recently invited University of Miami’s Dr. Hal Wanless to address the issue of global warming and its impact on South Florida. Dr, Wanless is chairman and a professor in the Department of Geological Sciences and Cooper Fellow in the College of Arts and Sciences. As more and more people are calling on elected officials and the government to address this issue in planning, Dr. Wanless has been in great demand. In fact, he also spoke to the Rotary Club of Coral Gables on the subject whish happened to tie into a talk by yet another Rotary speaker the following week. Speaker that week was South Miami Mayor Phil Stoddard, a Professor in the Department of Biological Sciences at FIU, who spoke on the FPL power line issue.
Halloween is just around the corner and there is no shortage of fun activities. If you visit Community Newspapers, you will find a hilarious assortment of folks dressed for the day. Sadly, because of security issues, banks can no longer participate as in the past. However, if you have a costume and are looking for a great party, join the crowd at the Coral Gables Woman’s Club for a Haunted House Party. $20 admission includes entertainment, a costume contest, prizes and food with a cash bar. If you are creative and/or fast, you will also want to consider entering the Great Grove Bed Race or, at the very least, attending the event on November 8th, on S. Bayshore Drive. Admission is only $5 and free for children 12 years and under. This is definitely a must attend event with lots of entertainment for all ages, food and even vendor booths.
