After a two-year interruption due to the COVID pandemic, the Rotary Club of Coral Gables’ Chili Cook Off finally will return on Sunday, Oct. 30.
That’s right, back to the original theme taking place the day before Halloween. This event gives the Rotary Club an opportunity to raise funds for their charitable foundation and give back to the community. The Chili Cookoff will take place at Fred B. Hartnett Ponce Circle Park from 1 to 5 p.m. and will offer drinks, entertainment, and award-winning chili!
This is the day before Halloween, so, costumes and themed table decorations will add to the fun Sunday afternoon with music, costume contests, chili tasting, silent auction for scholarship fund and more. Burgers and more will be sold for those really hungry that day.

Nonprofits, companies and individuals are encouraged to join in on the fun. Miami’s Community Newspapers will be there once again with our black, white and red chili as well as the Coral Gables Woman’s Club. Schools, service organizations, companies looking for team building events, etc., will want to participate.
There will be several cash prizes for the chili in various categories and even a prize for best decorated and People’s Choice.
Rotarian and presumptive president-elect as well as RCCG’s past president Frank Sexton is coordinating the production this year with assistance from long time committee members and RCCG past president Greg Martini during whose term the event was created. Terry Long, who chairs the club’s Scholarship Committee, is looking for auction prizes and the club is seeking additional sponsors, as well. Mark your calendars for this fun day.
Speaking of fun, the Power of the Purse Luncheon, a fundraiser for The Women’s Fund of Miami-Dade returned on Friday, Apr. 8, at the Hilton Downtown Miami. The affair, as always, attracted community leaders, philanthropists, and supporters from throughout Miami-Dade County who seek to “create positive change for women and girls through advocacy, investment, research, and collective impact.” Look for more on the affair in an upcoming column.
Mother’s Day is around the corner on May 8 and Coral Gables Woman’s Club is holding a fabulous Pre-Mother’s Day High Tea Affair on Saturday, May 7, from 1 to 4 p.m., at the Coral Gables Woman’s Club, 1001 E. Ponce de Leon Blvd. Look for a high-end silent auction, another opportunity to buy something special for mom.
This year’s annual fundraiser, co-chaired by Iris Segui and Kristina Jackson, embraces the theme of “Breakfast at Tiffany’s.” You can expect lots of black dresses and hats made popular by Audrey Hepburn’s role as Holly in the movie. Come in black or not, there will be plenty of photo ops.
Tickets are $85 per person and $55 for those under 21years of age. Proceeds will benefit the club’s children’s dental clinic that provides free dental care for Miami-Dade County children of the working poor. Kudos to the Women Voice Network founder and CEO Iris Garcia who recently graduated 38 women from her nonprofit’s women’s empowerment classes focused on individuals, even men at times, who have experienced abuse, human trafficking, etc. It was my pleasure to have Iris on Gloria’s Gab LIVE to share what the programs does to change lives. Everyone involved in this nonprofit volunteer their time, and all have full-time jobs.
Many attended were able to join some 21 graduates at a luncheon on Mar. 19 at Las Vegas in Doral. This afternoon of fun offered those graduates a day to celebrate with a party with many of the women who conducted free classes to empower women and prepare them to tackle good jobs.
