The GFWC District 11 women’s clubs had a busy January raising funds and volunteering time.

The GFWC Coco Plum Woman’s Club’s annual Festival of Tables on Jan. 22 raised funds for the University of Miami’s Thrive Clinic for victims of human trafficking. Many club members created themed tables inviting friends to join them for a lovely luncheon for a great cause.

Among the table hosts was Anita Jenkins, whose table theme was New Year’s Day hangover with lots of party hats, and great munchies from chicken wings to sandwiches and fruit brought by club members Yoli Woodbridge, Sally Perlman, Diana Martin, Julie Czaja, Pat Saunders and Helene Valentine.

Another table was filled Coco Plum members who were former members of the Coral Gables Junior Woman’s Club that merged years ago with the general woman’s club. It was a bit of a reunion for Barbara Wexler, Jane Noppenberg, Charlene Feldner, Donna Welcome and others who all danced together in CGJWC’s annual Cabaret shows for years to support the Coral Gables Club’s free children’s dental clinic.

Not to be outdone, the Miami Woman’s Club (MWC) held an English Afternoon Tea that featured music, champagne, great food and tea on Jan. 25. Proceeds from the tickets and a raffle brought in funds that go to charitable programs in the community. MWC president Metris Batts welcomed guests while MWC past president Shirley Pardon, who hales from England, gave everyone a brief history of the traditional English tea. Among the many ladies enjoying the afternoon were GFWC district director Dr. Ruth Martinez, Noreen Timoney, Patty Vila, Carol Horkowitz, Athena Atkinson and Linda Hartwell.

Meanwhile, the Coral Gables Woman’s Club collected more that 200 pounds of trash during the club’s monthly Saturday morning neighborhood cleanup on Jan. 25. For a few, it was a quick change and off to the Miami Woman’s Club to support the sister club’s tea.

Coral Gables Woman’s Club also held it monthly Gringo Bingo at Birdie Bistro on the Granada Golf Course to support its charitable work and its free children’s dental clinic. The always entertaining Steven Bradley and celebrity DJ Germain of IHeartRadio always make it a fun night. Last year alone, this monthly event raised more than $12,000 for charity.

These clubs are just a few of the 12 clubs comprising District 11 that are making a huge impact on the community. For more information on our South Florida clubs, contact gloria@cnews.net.
