Gulliver recently announced that Melissa Sullivan, who has held the position of assistant principal since 2010, has been promoted to principal at Gulliver Preparatory School’s Miller Drive campus.
Sullivan will take on this new role in the coming 2015-16 school year replacingy retired campus principal Steve Solomon.
Sullivan, who is an integral part of the Gulliver community, began her career at the school in 2003, as the head cross country and track and field coach as well as a science teacher at the Miller Drive campus. Most recently, before serving as assistant principal, she was director of student activities at the Prep.
“Sullivan has done an outstanding job in each position she has held at Gulliver, which is one of the reasons she has been selected for the Miller Drive principal position,” said Frank Steel, Gulliver’s head of schools. “There was an overwhelming consensus by administrators, faculty and parents that she is qualified to do an exceptional job in this position.”
Sullivan’s academic credentials include a bachelor’s degree in health science from the University of Massachusetts and a master’s degree in education from Nova Southeastern University.
During the course of her career she has held important civic leadership roles, ranging from serving as chair of the Miami-Dade Special Olympics Sponsor an Athlete 5K Run and the Coral Gables Chamber of Commerce Business and Education Committee, to being a member of the South Florida Emerald Society Inc.
In addition to being recognized in Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers, she has won prestigious awards, including the 2014 Miami-Dade Special Olympics Volunteer of the Year, 2011 Movers and Shakers Award for South Florida, 2011 Women Extraordinaire award, University of Massachusetts 1999 Chancellor’s Medal of Honor, University of Massachusetts Distinguished Medal of Public Service and the Student-Athlete Award of Appreciation from the University of Massachusetts.
