The Cutler Bay Senior High Swim Team reached new heights this year with its efforts in the pool.

The school now has its first state champion, Mary Smutny, who is home schooled but swims for Cutler Bay. Smutny won the Girls 200 Freestyle and finished in second place in the Girls 100 Freestyle while competing in the FHSAA Class 1A State Championships. Graduating senior and captain Hailey Jerew, finished in eighth place in the Girls 50 Freestyle, while Miguel Sierra, a sophomore, finished in 11th Place in the Boys 100 Butterfly.

The accomplishments achieved at the State Championships were amazing, but not completely surprising. School history was being made all season. The boys and girls teams took home their first runnerup trophies at the District 12 Championship on Oct. 30. Prior to that, the girls’ team won the school’s first GMAC Championship on Oct. 4.

In the Fall 2019, Hailey will be attending Florida Gulf Coast University and Mary will be attending the University of Texas.

The Cutler Bay Senior High swim team is coached by Marshall Ruffo, COAST Lead Teacher and UTD Building Steward.
