Luisa Santos, Miami-Dade County Public School Board member, on Feb. 15, honored five of the most prominent and inspiring Black leaders who have impacted South Miami-Dade County.
These individuals have made significant contributions to the community through their tireless efforts in various fields, including economic sustainability, social justice, education, arts, and politics.
The honorees were recognized for their unwavering dedication to bettering the lives of those around them and for serving as role models and mentors to the next generation of leaders. They have left an indelible mark on the community and will be remembered for years to come.
The five individuals honored were:
Wilbur Bell, a dedicated community mobilizer and philanthropist in Perrine who has made it his life’s mission to create and maintain well-paying jobs in South Dade.
Lucia Davis-Raiford, a human rights advocate and the president and CEO of the Carrie Meek Foundation, who promotes community engagement and resilience through education, healthcare, housing, and economic initiatives.
Dr. Marvin Dunn, a renowned sociologist and historian who has shed light on the rich cultural heritage of South Florida and its Black community.
Nadege Green, an award-winning journalist who has used her platform to bring attention to important issues affecting the Black community in Miami-Dade.
Commissioner Kionee McGhee, a dynamic leader who has been at the forefront of efforts to address social and political issues affecting the Black community in South Dade.
“These five leaders embody the spirit of excellence and dedication that make South Dade the thriving community it is today,” Santos said. “Their contributions to the economy, social justice, arts, and politics have touched the lives of countless individuals and inspired future generations to carry their legacy forward. It is with great honor that we celebrate their achievements and recognize their impact on our community.”
