Town’s 3rd Annual Senior Games attracts 80 Participants

Each year during the month of October, the Town hosts the Cutler Bay Senior Games.  The Senior Games movement first commenced in Florida in 1974 and was spearheaded by the Florida Sports Foundation.  The Senior Games is a multi-sport event program for adults ages 50 and over. The Cutler Bay Senior Games is sanctioned by the Florida Senior Games, which means participants may qualify to participate in the state games in Clearwater, Florida December 3-11, 2016.

A record eighty (80) participants from as far north as West Palm Beach and as far south as Key Largo participated in thirteen (13) different events.  The most popular events were basketball, swimming, pickleball, tennis, table tennis, horseshoes, billiards, bowling, and shuffleboard.  Our most decorated participant was Mr. Richard Foley with over ten (10) medals in the swimming events.  Mr. Arthur Keys won a gold medal in three (3) different events. Ms. Carol Sadlek earned a silver medal in bowling and will move on to participate in the State Games in December.  Our very own Councilmember Sue Ellen Loyzelle participates annually in the Senior Games, and qualified to compete in the State Games in horseshoes.

The Senior Games culminated in an awards ceremony and bar-b-que, which was held on October 21, at the Town Hall Building.  Miami-Dade County Commissioner Daniella Levine Cava joined Mayor Peggy Bell and Councilmember Sue Ellen Loyzelle in recognizing the participants and medalists.  Community partners such as AARP and the Alliance for Aging attended the ceremony and provided participants with educational material.  “I am extremely excited to see how much our Senior Games have grown in three short years.  This event has more than doubled in size since last year, and I am inspired by the participants that traveled from all over South Florida. These games motivate me to maintain an active and healthy lifestyle” stated Mayor Peggy Bell.  The Cutler Bay Senior Games were coordinated by the Town’s Parks and Recreation Department and Communities for a Lifetime Advisory Committee with the help of local corporate sponsor HealthSouth Rehabilitation Hospital.
