South Florida PBS Thrilled to Announce the Premiere of film-maker Season 7

Miami, FL – South Florida PBS (WPBT, WXEL, and Health Channel) is excited to announce the seventh season of film-maker premiering on Tuesdays, starting on May 27th at 7:30PM on WPBT2 and Thursday, starting on May 29th at 5:30PM on WXEL. Featuring a dynamic mix of narrative and documentary films, this new season showcases 11 films over 5 episodes, all made right here in South Florida by local filmmakers.

Film-maker Season 7 Selected Films

Documentary Film Winners:

Dirt Therapy – Director Sebastian Valencia
Robert “Doc” Crabtree, Charles “fiftyfoe” Ginther, and Bernard “Frenchy” Riviere, three mountain bikers from Miami, FL recall the unpredictable history of Virginia Key’s thrilling off-road trails, finding solace in the sport of mountain biking and the strong community surrounding it.

Querido Pequeño Haiti – Director Diana Larrea  
“Querido Pequeño Haiti” is an experimental documentary, a love letter to a place that will forever be home, a visual ode, and a farewell to a neighborhood that is rapidly changing due to the forces of gentrification in Miami’s housing crisis. From the gaze of a Peruvian resident who lived in Little Haiti, the film juxtaposes personal images documented over the past eight years with the new developments in the community. It is a letter to the Haitian and Latinx communities, who are homesick but try to find themselves in every other culture in hopes of belonging to a place and making it home.

El Soldador – Director Alexandra Martinez  
A houseless welder contemplates his health after receiving care from a team of doctors at Miami Street Medicine.

Parodi the Petite Museum – Director Pablo Velho
This is a documentary about Paquita Parodi who worked on her first garment at the age of twelve when her grandmother challenged her to repair a chemise to its original state. Her prowess as a novice seamstress won her the first piece as a reward. She never imagined that this first challenge would recur countless times in the future, shaping her into one of the leading experts and restoration experts of vintage fashion. 

The Purpose – Director Dan Abrusci
Born with a disability, a young music enthusiast is lured into a life of crime and spends a decade in jail after hanging in the wrong places. While in prison, he discovers his purpose:  to help at-risk youth and prevent them from making the same mistakes he did.

Open Dialogues: Gen QueerZ – Director Freddy Rodriguez Producer Jeff Rusnak
Open Dialogues: Gen Queer Z captures the LGBTQ+ narratives of eight South Florida students who are part of Generation Z. The fourth film in the Center’s Open Dialogues series, Gen Queer Z gives voice to students who are among the first generation to be “out” while attending school and living at home. Their stories reflect the diversity of gender identities, cultural backgrounds, and academic studies while exploring allyship, threats, and the dynamics of being out at home with family.  

Roots of Lil Green House – Director Adrian Turner & Urgent Inc.
A docu-short that covers the background story of Overtown’s Lil Green House restaurant. From a humble beginning as a local food truck, providing meals at a great price is their life’s work. A great deal of thought and love goes into every ingredient, providing on the best.

Narrative Film Winners:

Las Luces  – Director Fernanda Lamuño / Producer Vasisth Sukul
On the hunt for a mysterious legend in the heart of the Everglades, three friends get lost in a twisted reality where they must figure out what’s real before they vanish for good.

Down to Zero – Director Joshua Jean-Baptiste
Kyle’s swagger is cut short by Brutus, his childhood barber, who delivers a harsh truth about his hairline, sending him on an introspective journey about acceptance and ego.

Silence in the Dark – Director Steven Salgado
After witnessing a brutal crime, a mute woman struggles to survive when she becomes the target of a ruthless killer, sparking a frantic race for her life.

Hooky – Director Princess Usanga
“Goody two-shoes” high school freshman, Nora, agrees to play “hooky” with her rebellious friend, Renee. Their day of skipping school in Miami in 1995 tests their friendship as they navigate a series of back-to-back calamities. Nora’s struggle with being a second-generation Haitian trying to assimilate to American culture hits new heights when she is at risk of her grandparents catching her skipping school. If the girls get caught – Nora’s personal life if over.
