There are many carmakers playing in the compact SUV category, but Mercedes Benz’s 2020 GLB 250 SUV is a luxurious standout.
The outside has a lean, beautiful design that speaks to its Mercedes pedigree, with a front and taillights that echo its other SUVs.
Upon entering, it feels like a Mercedes, with a boxy shape that reminds you of classic models. It’s got great headroom and legroom and even the cargo area has got plenty of room. Capacity goes as high as seven people, but five is the magic number for this crossover. And to expand the feeling of space, you can get a panoramic sunroof for about $1,500. And watching Mars in the sky won’t be a problem at night.
The noise of the world is outside and you feel relaxed and focused inside the spacious cabin. That feeling is extended is when the car is in motion because of its smooth eight-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission, which has a nice shift between gears. It gets 23 miles per gallon in the city and 30 on the highway.
It has a base price of more than $36,000, which is a good starting point for many. The fully loaded model is priced at about $50,000.
The acceleration happens in 6.9 seconds, which is quite quick jumping onto the highway.
That is because it has a 2.0-liter turbocharged I-4 that produces 221 horsepower and 258 pounds-feet of power.
The signature MBUX infotainment system is standard in this model, with an ample 10-inch display that comes with the $2,000 premium package providing a clear interface for the driver and passenger. And whether you are an Apple or Android fan, the GLB 250 has got you covered.
What I liked most about the infotainment system is that it has several points to manipulate it. You can use voice commands — which I prefer — or the steering wheel, which has thumb-pads. It also responds to touch and there is a track pad in the console, too.
The excellent technology extends to the augmented reality feature, which show up on the forward camera when in navigation mode. It really is something to behold, especially if you are willing to buy the driver assistance and parking packages, which make me feel safe and cozy.
I also like that I can choose between eco, comfort and sport modes, which gives my conscience relief. For me, I would typically choose sport, but eco gives me a great driving buzz with power to match.
All in all, the 2020 GLB 250 SUV is a great crossover worthy of the Mercedes Benz name.
