Holidays in Wonderland: A Lewis Carroll Story at Deering Estate

Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

This year, the Deering Estate’s Historic Holiday Décor celebrates the holiday season with décor inspired by the fantastical world of Lewis Carroll. Led by Deering Estate Designer-in-Residence, Alfredo Brito, each room of the Stone House and Richmond Cottage will feature whimsical holiday decorations by premiere local interior designers that will bring to life the colorful characters and topsy-turvy world of Wonderland. Carroll’s beloved characters including Alice, White Rabbit, Mad Hatter and the Queen of Hearts will be featured in several of the historic rooms and galleries and hand-decorated holiday trees. Highlights of this year’s décor will include an imagined recreation of Carroll’s literary studio, a table set for Mad Tea Party, and many other surprises!

The Historic Holiday Décor is on display daily, November 24, 2023 to January 7, 2024 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and is free with Estate admission: $15 for adults and $7 for children (ages 4-14). Please note that the Deering Estate is closed on December 25th.

Lewis Carroll, born Charles Lutwidge Dodgson, was an English author, poet, and mathematician, known for his beloved books Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland (1865) and Through the Looking-Glass and What Alice Found There (1872).

The Deering Estate’s holiday décor includes over a dozen holiday trees, from the grand tree in the Stone House Great Hall, to multiple smaller trees throughout the historic houses that will be lavishly decorated to accentuate the architectural details and fine furnishings of the historic structures. Each room is thoughtfully designed and dressed by a cadre of award-winning professional interior designers.
