If you were raised, like me, every year during spring or spring break, my mother would make us “spring clean”. We did not go on spring vacation, but rather we would be outside cleaning windows, wiping down the interior walls of the house, cleaning out the closet, cabinets, drawers, baseboards, shed, and any other projects mom had on her annual checklist. It always seemed like a daunting task but we managed to work together and get the job done. In retrospect, I appreciate those lessons taught by my mother, it instilled a hard work ethic, team work, and cleanliness among other attributes which continue to resonate with me always.
In my opinion, our community could use a good, old fashioned spring cleaning. Growing up in West Park, Carver Ranches subdivision, we always exhibited a sense of pride and community. I don’t feel that we have lost that sense of pride nor community; sometimes all we need is a word of encouragement, coaching, support and resources.
I encourage us all to work together to get the community work completed. Many of you, just like me, will be doing a deep house cleaning. Others may decide to do some yard work or gardening, pruning back trees in anticipation for the growing season. We have several tasks we will need to work together to get done. As we work towards our community cleaning efforts, don’t forget to look out for your neighbors who may need a helping hand, and volunteer your services if you are able-bodied to help our vulnerable seniors and the disabled.
We have to reclaim our communities collectively by ensuring our streets are not littered with trash and debris. Properly trim back your trees; if you are unable to do the work yourself, hire a reputable company. The city has a tree trimming program as well that will assist you with up to $250.00 per tree for those who qualify. Ensure your yard is free of clutter and excess debris or bulk trash. The city’s solid waste imitative allows you to put bulk trash in your swale every month with dates of services varying depending on your respective zones. If you are not sure of the size of the bulk trash allowed, or the pickup dates for your zones, please contact the Code Enforcement or Public Works Departments for those details, or visit the City’s website. Typically, trash piles should be no taller or wider than a small dumpster bin, approximately 2 to 4 cubic yards.
The city also has partnered with Broward County for residents to utilize the trash transfer station located at the intersection of SW 56th Ave and Hallandale Beach Blvd. This is another weekly option for free trash/bulk or hazardous waste disposal.
