Miami’s Community Newspapers backs Miami Gardens Mayor Rodney Harris for re-election. Mayor Harris has shown unwavering commitment to his constituents and a tireless work ethic to help the city thrive. Born and raised in Miami-Dade County, Harris moved his family to Miami Gardens over 25 years ago. He and his wife, Shebra, a retired public school teacher, have successfully raised five children, a testament to their dedication to family values.
Mayor Harris has empowered the youth and fostered community growth throughout his career. He founded the Department of Juvenile Justice’s “Success Through Empowerment Program” (STEP) and organized the “Dreamers” non-profit scholarship to help inner-city students obtain a college education. His youth leadership skills were also witnessed nationwide on the football field when he coached his alma mater, Miami Northwestern High School, to a national championship in 2007.
Elected as a Councilman in 2012 and re-elected in 2016, Harris’s stewardship was further recognized when he was appointed Vice Mayor in 2018. In November 2020, he became the city’s third Mayor since its inception. His significant achievements include being co-chair of the Miami Gardens Community Redevelopment Area (CRA), President of the Miami-Dade County League of Cities, Executive Board Member of the Florida League of Cities, Board Member of the Transportation Planning Organization for Miami-Dade County, and Executive Board Member of the Beacon Council.
Legacy magazine honored Mayor Harris as one of Miami’s fifty most powerful and influential black professionals. In 2019, he was celebrated as one of the Miami Dade Black Affairs Advisory Board’s honorees during the Black History Month “Vessels and Triumphant Spirits” exhibit. He also received the Davis Prudential Award for outstanding service to the State of Florida.
Given his firm devotion to public service, community empowerment, and positive impact on the youth, Miami’s Community Newspapers wholeheartedly endorse Rodney Harris’ re-election as Mayor of Miami Gardens.
