Remember When the Orange Bowl Had a Queen?

Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

The Orange Bowl was more than just a football game or a stadium. It was a series of events filled with pageantry. One of its unique traditions was the crowning of a queen. In 1974, Ann Lisk was part of that tradition when she was selected queen. Then known as Ann Whitten, she was a graduate of Coral Gables High School and the University of Miami. She and her husband, who is also a University of Miami graduate, currently reside in West Jefferson, North Carolina, where they run the Southern Sun Farm Horse Sanctuary, a non-profit organization dedicated to caring for abandoned and neglected horses. It is named after the first line of the University of Miami’s alma mater.

Ann was part of a long tradition of Orange Bowl queens and princesses selected by the Orange Bowl Committee to lead the annual King Orange Jamboree Parade through downtown Miami every New Year’s Eve. The queen would also appear on a float during the traditional halftime show of the New Year Day Orange Bowl game. Past Orange Bowl queens and princesses include local television news anchorwoman Jackie Nespral and actress Victoria Principal. The King Orange Jamboree Parade ran for 62 years until it was cancelled in 2002 due to the loss of a TV contract and hundred of thousands of dollars in corporate support. The end of the parade would effectively end the reign of the Orange Bowl queen.  To read more stories about the Orange Bowl, visit us on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/ghostsoftheorangebowl
