Patricia Keon is running for Mayor of the City of Coral Gables in the municipal election scheduled for Tuesday, Apr. 13.
Keon has served two four-year terms as a city commissioner, beginning in 2013. Mayor Raúl Valdés-Fauli appointed her as vice mayor from May 9, 2017 to April 2018.
“If elected, what would I do in the first 100 days after taking office? If elected this would be a continuation of the eight years I have served as a commissioner in the city. I know the city and staff well so would likely continue to meet with residents and staff and community partners on the local government issues. I’d also meet with the county mayor and district commissioners that represent us to ensure a collaborative relationship between our municipal and regional government.”
My Priorities:
● Mandate the wearing of masks, social distancing and other CDC guidelines to stop the spread of COVID-19.
● Citywide storm drainage assessment and plan update.
● Restoration of City Hall.
● Continued development of neighborhood parks.
● Art and cultural events in the downtown to attract visitors to support our restaurants and retail establishments
● Continue science-based policies to improve water quality in the waterways and Biscayne Bay through water quality monitoring.
● Restart the conversation about the residents desire for bike lanes to safely connect different areas of the city. Before a plan is devised and presented to the public there is a lot of grassroots work that needs to be done to build consensus.
● Continue to ensure our zoning code is not ambiguous or conflicted and clearly addresses all regulation for development within the city and incentivizes smaller development.
Commissioner Keon has a long history of public service in the community. She has been appointed to serve on a number of city boards including the Parks and Recreation Advisory Board, where she spearheaded the redevelopment of the Coral Gables War Memorial Youth Center. She also served previously on the City’s Planning and Zoning Board.
Keon graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Barry College in 1970. She worked at New York University Medical Center and later at Jackson Memorial Hospital until 1976 when her first child was born. During the time her children were of school age, she was an officer or board member of their PTAs and also served on various school board advisory panels. She went back to graduate school at Florida International University (FIU) in 1996 and completed a master’s in Public Administration in December 1999. She worked as policy aide to County Commissioner Jimmy Morales from 1999 until he left office in 2004.
