Three Saint Thomas the Apostle Catholic School third graders took first place in the Toshiba/NSTA ExploraVision Science K-3rd Competition.
Inspired by family members and classmates who suffer from food allergies and guided by their coach/teacher, Carmen M. Garcia, students Isabella Gustin, Adriana Icaza, and Emilia Martinez Christensen created “The Allergen Detector.”
The device which attaches to a child’s clothes can detect food allergies by scanning the ingredients through visual and odor sensors (digital smell technology). Odor molecules waft into the sensors while the visual scanner detects the ingredients that are utilized in the food product. The information is then synthesized and transmitted to recognize allergy causing ingredients. A signal indicating whether food is safe for consumption is then transmitted by “The Allergen Detector.”
The project won regionals and then first place in the national K-3rd competition. Each student will receive a U.S. EE Savings Bond worth $ 10, 000 at maturity and a trip to Washington, DC, in June for the ExploraVision Awards weekend.
Toshiba/NSTA Explora Vision is a 32-year-old national science competition designed for students in grades K-12. Students work in groups of two to four solving real-world problems with a strong emphasis on STEM. ExploraVision challenges students to envision and communicate new technology 10 or more years in the future by researching current science and technology.
Since its inception in 1992, more than 450,000 students have participated in the Toshiba/ExploraVision competition.
