Shorts Under the Stars: A Night of Animation at Deering Estate
Surrounded by stunning views and a sunset, grab a spot outdoors on the lawn to watch a selection of short films.

Deering Estate in partnership with the Miami short Film Festival (MIAMIsFF) will present “Shorts Under the Stars: A Night of Animation” on Sunday, Sept. 19.

Enjoy the stunning views and sunset, then grab a spot outdoors on the lawn to watch a selection of short films. Early access begins at 5:30 p.m. and the screening begins at 7 p.m. Guests can bring blankets, lawn chairs, and small picnic baskets. The following items are not permitted: large coolers, open flames/candles, balloons and pop-up tents/umbrellas.

Tickets are $20 and space is limited. Purchase tickets online.

Deering Estate is located at 16701 SW 72 Ave. in Palmetto Bay. Free street side parking is available along SW 72nd Avenue between SW 168th Street and 164th Terrace. Free parking also is available in the Visitor Center parking lot located on SW 168th Street just west of 72nd Avenue. The event entrance and entrance of the Deering Estate is via the Main Gate located on 72nd Avenue near SW 167th Street. After entering through the Main Gate, proceed down the main pathway, passing the historic house museums. The event area is on the large front lawn next to Biscayne Bay.

The following short films will be presented:
Foxed!
Directed by James Stewart, 3:30 min., Animation, Canada (2012) — Emily has been Foxed! In this 3D stop-motion tale of human rights and fighting for what you believe. Filmed in stunning 3D over a two-year period, director James Stewart crafts a cautionary tale about child labor, growing up in an environment of parental control, and how children are often portrayed in the eyes of their parents.

Shave it
Directed by Fernando Maldonado, 4:31 min., Animation, Argentina (2012) — In a jungle where giant bulldozers shave the vegetation, a monkey finds a razor and decides to use it. With a human appearance, he moves to the city and sets out to climb society’s ladder.

I Am Tom Moody
Directed by Ainslie Henderson, 7 min., Animation, UK (2013) — A surreal trip through the subconscious of a stifled musician as he struggles to sing, I Am Tom Moody is a brilliantly funny and touching film about fighting with your inner child and growing, together.

El Empleo
Directed by Santiago “Bou” Grasso, 6:25 min., Animation, Argentina (2014) — A man Performs his usual trip to work, immersed in a world where the use of people as objects in an everyday thing.

Rabbit & Deer
Directed by Peter Vacz, 16:24 min., Animation, Hungary (2014) — Rabbit and Deer are living happily and careless until their friendship is put to the test by Deer’s new obsession to find the formula for the third dimension. After an unexpected accident Deer finds himself in a new world, unknown to him. Separated by dimensions the two friends must find the way back to each other.

Lost Property

Directed by Philip and Gottfrid Helander, 6:19 min., Animation, Sweden (2017) — The local police in a small Japanese village are called out when a violent samurai disturbs the peace.

How Countries Fight Their Wars
Directed by Thomas Loopstra/ Maurice Baltissen, 2:00 min, Netherlands (2019) — How countries fight their wars.

The Mechanical Dancer
Directed by Jenna Jaillet, 12:34 min, Animation, US (2020) — In a rundown part of town there stands a small theater, owned by an eccentric old man. We follow him and the strange cast of character show, and as a series of crimes unravel over three acts, we see how each character’s fate will change after one perilous night.

Cultural Arts Programming at the Deering Estate is made possible with the support of the Miami-Dade County Department of Cultural Affairs and the Cultural Affairs Council, the Miami-Dade County Mayor and Board of County Commissioners, and The Deering Estate Foundation Inc.

The Miami short Film Festival is dedicated to promoting the short film genre, showcasing films from 1-20 minutes long. The Festival is international in scope, bringing exposure to the world’s best independent up-and-coming filmmakers. MIAMIsFF’s goal year after year is focused on motivating directors, screenwriters, actors, and producers to make films and share them with fellow filmmakers and industry professionals. The ultimate goal is to bring exposure to independent up-and-coming filmmakers.

MIAMIsFF is an avid supporter of local and international filmmakers representing cinematic productions that embody the true spirit of the art.
