The Council’s Columns: Vice Mayor Katrina Wilson

One of my most outstanding achievements this year has been winning my re-election. After my first four years, being given 61% of the vote really meant the world to me.

I believe the voters appreciated the work I did during my initial term — from Juneteenth to the quarterly cleanups, the Women’s Exposition, our food giveaways, and how we managed the pandemic.

My constituents mean a lot to me. I am able to improve the quality of life for them. I want to serve them so that they feel valued. I recognize that as a leader and a public servant, people don’t get everything they want, but it’s important to me that it’s a fair process and that they haven’t been ignored.

Turning 20 in 2023

I’m excited about the City of Miami Gardens turning 20, and I plan to tell the story in writing. I procured a resolution to hire an archivist to record how this City was founded. I want to publish a book for the archives and libraries, and I would also like to produce a documentary, so people can see where we come from.

New Initiatives for the New Year

I look forward to building the Street Fair and Marketplace to become the center of commerce for locals and our sister cities. The census has revealed that we have Black communities surrounding our City, so I want to create a center of commerce for non-brick-and-mortar businesses. Most vendors are women, and the vast majority make what they sell: candles, makeup, earrings, clothing, food, hair care products, and so on.

I want to see all of the scheduled renovations on parks in Seat 4 completed. It will take me about two and a half years to move through that process.

I plan to develop an educational component for our many entrepreneurs — free vocational education run by the City. Our kids need the training, whether in auto body, EMT (emergency medical technician), nursing, or something else, so they can graduate from high school already with those skill sets.

I also want to continue to keep the City clean and beautiful at every turn.
