The South Florida community is invited to gather for a day of wiffle ball, music and fellowship for a good cause — raising money to reduce medical expenses for Katy Puig, a student-athlete at Our Lady of Lourdes Academy who was critically injured in a boat crash on Biscayne Bay last September.

The Katy Strong Wiffle Ball Classic will take place on Saturday, May 6, from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., at the Kendall Boys and Girls Club (K-Land), located at 9475 SW 88 St.

Since the accident, Katy has received medical care at several hospitals specializing in brain injuries. She was recently transferred to the Puig family home to receive care in a familiar and comfortable setting.

“Katy’s traumatic brain injury was a life changer,” said her father, Rudy Puig. “She is conscious and has some movement in her arms and one leg. She has come a long way but still has a long way to go.”

Grammy Award-winning singer Jon Secada will perform at the event and is helping to spread the word about the importance of community involvement.

“Come out and have a good time; learn what the purpose is all about, and help us,” Secada said.

Puig family friend Sergio Padron has made a significant financial contribution to the Katy Strong Wiffle Ball Classic and is actively involved in the fundraising.

“Katy’s medical costs are about to dramatically increase, since she’s been moved to outpatient status,” Padron said. “We all want to help Katy. With the community involved, we can move mountains.”

Padron, founder and CEO of MD Exam, said his company will donate one dollar toward Katy’s medical bills for every pound lost by participants enrolled in MD Exam’s 90-Day Lifestyle Challenge.

To participate in the tournament, individual player enrollment fees are $125 for adults and $100 for high school students (ages 14-18). The entrance fee for spectators is $10; VIP tickets cost $50.

There also are six different corporate sponsorship categories offering a range of benefits including team enrollment tickets, VIP tickets and name recognition opportunities in marketing materials and on T-shirts and signage.

The Katy Strong Wiffle Ball Classic is a double-elimination tournament featuring six-person teams competing in adult and high school divisions. Whiffle balls and bats will be provided to teams.

Participants may pick up their T-shirt and goody bag at the Hole in the Wall in Kings Creek at 8002 SW 81 Dr. on Thursday, May 4, from 7 to 9 p.m.
