The Town of Cutler Bay’s annual Halloween Spooktacular event took place on Friday, Oct. 29, and enjoyed record-breaking attendance, drawing even more people than before the pandemic.

Activities for those attending included a haunted house, “trunk or treat” (candy dispensed from car trunks), a costume contest, photo booth, bounce house and slide, food trucks and music — all made possible by the community coming together.

Town Mayor Tim Meerbott, Vice Mayor Michael Callahan and Councilmember Suzy Lord particpated in the festivities and took to the stage to greet attendees. They also handed out the awards.

For the costume contest, prizes of first, second and third place trophies were given out in each of the following categories:

Infants to 2 years, 3-6 years, 7-9 years, 10-13 years, 14-17 years, 18 and older, and Pets.
Kim Thomas, Special Events Coordinator for the town, was pleased with the substantial turnout.

“We had about 150 people participate in the costume competition,” Thomas said. “We registered 25 in each category and all the categories were filled, except for the pets. It was definitely a good event.”

In addition to the costume contest, another big part of the Halloween Spooktacular was the parade of decorated golf carts. More than 800 golf carts and vehicles arrived at Cutler Ridge Park to participate in the annual tradition, much higher than what was anticipated.

The high numbers actually caused some traffic problems for the golf cart parade.

Golf cart parades have become a signature event of Cutler Bay, so before the parade the Parks & Recreation and Police staff met a number of times to discuss the logistics, map and drive the route, ensure the streets were clean and in good condition and look at other important details.

Lots of creativity was displayed in both the costumes and the golf cart decoration.
