The Village of Palmetto Bay formally honored the memory of resident Larry Barfield on Saturday, Sept. 18, by renaming SW 82nd Avenue as “Larry Barfield Avenue.” The ceremony took place at the intersection of SW 82nd Avenue and SW 160th Street.
Barfield, a longtime resident, passed away Oct. 15, 2020 at age 77. His son Trace put in a request for the street at that intersection to be named for his dad.
Larry Barfield was a graduate of Georgia Tech University and a former U.S. Marine. He worked for several national corporations before launching a number of businesses of his own. He and his wife, Colleen, operated Kings Bay Athletics in Palmetto Bay for 42 years. A member of St. Louis Catholic Church in Pinecrest, he was active in a number of church ministries and in the Palmetto Bay community.
Participating in the ceremony were Village Mayor Karyn Cunningham, Vice Mayor Leanne Tellam, Councilmembers Steve Cody and Patrick Fiore, Barfield’s wife Colleen and their son Trace, Fr. Paul Vuturo of St. Louis Catholic Church, Frank Guyamier. Also attending were a large number of friends and other relatives. The ceremony was live-streamed on Facebook and the village website. Email comments by people in the community praising Barfield were read aloud by Mayor Cunningham.
Mayor Cunningham acknowledged the help of Frank Guyamier, a village resident and deputy director of engineering at Miami-Dade County, who helped obtain permission for the change of the street sign’s name at that corner because it is a county road. Each member of the council who attended spoke briefly about Larry Barfield, and his son, Trace, and wife, Colleen, gave touching tributes. Fr. Paul Vuturo led the opening and closing prayers.
The ceremony concluded with the unveiling of the new street sign.
