MIAMI- As we spend more time using the Internet and on-line resources we can face unknown risks and dangers. Belen tries to help our education on all of the positive and negative implications of modern technology.
A presentation on “Internet Risks” will be offered to Belen’s 7th, 8th and 9th grade students on April 19 at 9:30 a.m. by Ms. Josie Ashton of the Attorney General’s Office, Cybercrimes unit. She has spoken in the past to our students and parents and will provide some practical and essential information.
A special session for parents will be held in the Roca Theater on April 19 at 7:30 p.m. Some of those Internet risks are posting inappropriate pictures or messages on line, using social media to bully or humiliate others and being solicited on-line by adults posing as young people. All middle school parents are cordially invited.
“The internet has become an integral part in all of our lives but more specifically, in that of our youth as it is now necessary for their education, socialization and general growth and development. There are so many benefits to this technology that they seem to outweigh any negative consequences,” said Teresa Gutierrez, Director of School Counseling. “However, one instance of misjudgment while on-line can have disastrous and even permanent consequences. For this reason, parents and all adults who interact with our youth need to be informed and vigilant about the potential hazards the internet can pose.”
“We all need to be aware of the dangers found in cyberspace,” said Jesuit Father Pedro Suarez, President of the school. “It is our hope that through these presentations both our students and their parents will become more knowledgeable on this important topic and be safer online.”

Belen Jesuit Preparatory School <http://www.belenjesuit.org/> was founded by the Jesuits in 1854 in Havana, Cuba. In 1961, Belen and all private schools were confiscated by the new political regime. The School was re-established in Miami that same year and has grown over the last five decades. Currently the enrollment is nearly 1,500 male students in grades 6 to 12 and over 6-thousand alumni.
