FPL shares ways to stay warm and save this winter

Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

Winter has arrived and Florida Power & Light Company (FPL) urges customers to gear up for cooler temperatures. Cold snaps can significantly impact energy bills as heating uses two to three times more energy than cooling.

To help customers stay warm while saving energy, FPL has launched a winter edition of the House of Savings that presents eight new, easy-to-implement tips to assist customers in minimizing energy usage during the colder months. For each completed play, FPL will donate $2 to Care To Share, which helps Floridians facing temporary financial difficulties with emergency bill payment assistance.

In addition to visiting the House of Savings, customers can save this winter with the following tips:
• Keep your home at 68 F or cooler to save up to 5 percent in heating costs for every degree below 68.
• If you have a heat pump, avoid changing your thermostat by more than two degrees at a time to prevent emergency heat from activating.
• Optimize natural sunlight by keeping south-facing windows clean, opening curtains during the day and closing them at night.
• Use space heaters or electric blankets for targeted heating, remembering to operate them safely and efficiently.
• Set your water heater to 115-120 degrees for energy savings without compromising hot water availability.
• Reduce your pool pump’s run time by two hours a day to save more than $8 a month.
• Weatherize your home with foam, vinyl or caulking around windows, and insulate hot water pipes and your water heater. Attic insulation also can reduce your heating and cooling costs, and you can save up to $1,420 between FPL’s Ceiling Insulation Rebate and the IRA tax credits.
