The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) commends Governor Ron DeSantis’ recent announcement of a proposed $400 million in new funding to increase the salaries of state law enforcement officers plus provide bonuses for first responders and funding for state and local level recruitment efforts.
“As a former law enforcement officer, I want to thank Governor DeSantis for his commitment to our state law enforcement officers,” said FWC Chairman Rodney Barreto. “These additional resources will be invested into conservation law enforcement officers who will work diligently to conserve resources that will keep Florida the Fishing and Boating Capital of the World for generations to come.”
Governor DeSantis’ funding proposal includes an increase to the salaries of Florida’s state law enforcement officers, correctional officers, and state special risk firefighters as well as, for the second year in a row, provides $1,000 bonuses for first responders, including law enforcement officers, paramedics, emergency medical technicians and firefighters across the state. Governor DeSantis is also proposing $5,000 bonuses to recruit and retain both state and local level law enforcement. This proposal will be considered during the 2022 Legislative Session.
“This is yet another testament to Governor DeSantis’ steadfast support of law enforcement,” said Col. Roger Young, FWC Division of Law Enforcement. “The conservation law enforcement officers of the FWC work hard every day to protect the people and natural resources of Florida. This initiative will enable our agency to recruit and retain qualified officers and continue to provide excellent public service to Floridians and visitors to the state.”
