Ground-brraking ceremony for addition at Herbert A. Ammons Middle School

Miami-Dade County Public Schools (M-DCPS) officials gathered this recently at Herbert A. Ammons Middle School to break ground on the new three-story, 113,065-square-foot, solar-ready facility.

Chief Facilities Design/Construction Officer Raul F. Perez, South Region Superintendent Rafael A. Villalobos, District 7 School Board member Mary Blanco, Ammons Middle principal Maria Costa were joined by District and construction representatives, faculty and students for the ceremony.

Florida Lemark Corporation was contracted to deliver the $39.9 million project that will house 1,337 student stations at the campus located in southern Miami-Dade County.

The school, which first opened in 1997, was the county’s first fully authorized schoolwide International Baccalaureate Middle Years Program. The new facility will have general purpose classrooms, skill development/art/music labs, kitchen/food prep area, administration offices, student/staff restrooms, CCTV and access control systems, HVAC, parent/bus drop off lanes, parking and landscaping.

The school bond projects resulted from voter approval of the $1.2 billion General Obligation Bond. The bond is being used to modernize and construct school buildings throughout the district, expand student capacity, enhance facility safety, and provide technology upgrades at all schools.
