Signature Weekend Rooted in Impactful Community Service, Arts, and Culture

Washington, DC, and Miami Beach will unite for the 16th Annual “Miami Takeover” (MTO), a vibrant three-day celebration grounded in a legacy of culture and community, July 26-29, 2024. This highly anticipated weekend is dedicated to Go-Go music, spoken word, and community service. MTO weekend offers professionals and tastemakers of color a unique blend of parties, networking, community service, vibrant culture, and diversity, providing an authentic Miami experience. The theme of the weekend is to celebrate and share the vibrant and unique culture of DC, centered around its deep-rooted affinity for Go-Go music. Tickets are available at Event Noire.

With a commitment to community service, the organizers will host their annual Colgate Bright Smiles, Bright Futures dental screenings on Thursday, July 25, 2024. In partnership with the Miami Beach PAL and Colgate, this event will provide dental screenings for 150 children at Flamingo Park in Miami Beach from 12:30 pm to 3:00 pm.

The MTO weekend officially kicks off on July 26 with the Trap Poetry Miami & All White Party at the Muhammad Ali Gym (555 Washington Ave). The event features live music and a spoken word night hosted by Matt Capone and EPIC, combining the dynamic energy of the DMV and Miami’s vibrant poetry scene.

“As someone who has dedicated my career to creating memorable experiences, I am incredibly proud of how The Miami Takeover has evolved. This event is more than just a weekend getaway; it celebrates DC culture and the hospitality and beauty of the Greater Miami/Miami Beach area. We look forward to welcoming attendees from across the country to join us for what promises to be our most exciting Miami Takeover yet,” said Wylie Kynard, Co-founder of The WK&F Group and General Partner of The Miami Takeover LLC.

Since 2007, the event has hosted notable personalities such as Katt Williams (comedian), Red Grant (comedian/artist), Lil Duval (comedian/musician), Doug E Fresh (Entertainer), MC Lyte (Rapper/DJ), and Dave Chapelle (Comedian).

This year’s MTO’s highlight and central focus is “The Art of Go-Go Culture Fest,” featuring interactive art installations curated by Demont “Peekaso” Pinder, known as the Culture Curator. This vibrant music, dance, and culture celebration will be held at the Miami Beach Bandshell (7275 Collins Ave) on July 27 from 5 to 11 pm. Go-Go is a funk subgenre from late 1970s Washington, DC, known for heavy bass, syncopated rhythms, call-and-response, and large ensembles with multiple percussionists. The “pocket” beat, central to Go-Go, is built around the drummer and conga player, whose rhythms define the genre. The event will feature performances by soulful songstress Janae Music, Backyard Band, Sirius Company, and Black Passion, with music powered by DJ Quicksilva.

“The Miami Takeover delivers unforgettable experiences, showcasing the vibrant spirit and energy of Greater Miami & Miami Beach, attracting attendees from the DC area and beyond. This annual celebration is one of our premier summer events, filled with music, art, and more,” said Connie W. Kinnard, SVP of Multicultural Tourism & Development for the Greater Miami Convention & Visitors Bureau. “We are delighted to be a sponsor and partner this year, celebrating the Art of Go-Go in alignment with the GMCVB’s Art of Black Miami program.”

The 2024 sponsors include the Miami Beach Visitor and Convention Authority, Greater Miami Convention and Visitors Bureau, Art of Black Miami, Miami Beach Black Affairs Advisory Committee, and Miami Beach Bandshell.

The organizers of MTO will also host their annual beach sweep in partnership with the Miami Beach Convention Center on Sunday, July 28, at 10:30 am at the beach entrance on 17th Street (near the Marseilles Beachfront Hotel). Beach cleanups are vital for tackling marine life.

Q&A with Wylie Kynard, Co-Founder Miami Takeover

Q: How has The Miami Takeover evolved since its inception in 2008, and what new experiences can attendees expect this year?

A: Over the past 16 years, The Miami Takeover has grown from a small gathering into a vibrant annual event. This evolution has included networking opportunities, community service initiatives, VIP parties, and dining experiences. This year, guests can stay in Miami Beachfront accommodations with stunning views of the South Beach skyscape and participate in high-energy events such as the ‘Art of Go-Go,’ BACK BY POPULAR DEMAND for its second anniversary, lighting up the Miami Beach Bandshell with the historical look and sound of DC.

Q: Can you share more about the unique blend of parties, networking, and community service that defines The Miami Takeover?

A: We seek like-minded professionals to join us in Miami and help enhance our party experience. Our “ONE CITY, ONE WEEKEND, ONE SOUND” theme embodies our mission for DC to “Take Over” Miami while embracing each other’s culture. Our vision is to carry the culture of DC Go-Go music to Miami and share this gift with as many people as possible. We also aim to give back to the communities we visit through various “community service” ventures and give-back opportunities. The event draws participants from major cities across the country.

Q: What strategies do you employ to attract such a diverse audience, and what makes The Miami Takeover stand out from similar events?

A: We seek guests familiar with the unique sound of GO-GO and those who have never heard of it, making Miami Takeover an exceptional introduction to the art of GO-GO sound. We were the first to merge DC culture with Miami flair, bringing top-notch talents from the GO-GO genre to Miami Beach for the past 16 years. We also seek luxurious accommodations and state-of-the-art venues. The Miami Takeover has hosted numerous notable personalities over the years.

Q: Can we look forward to special guests or highlights this year?

A: This year, we feature the unique “Backyard Band,” a GO-GO group from DC. After a performance at the ROOTS PICNIC in Philly, they will bring their electrifying energy to Miami. Our ART OF GO-GO Cultural festival will showcase influential artists from MIAMI and Washington, DC. Community service is a significant component of The Miami Takeover, exemplified by the Beach Sweep event.

Q: How important is giving back to the community in the overall vision of The Miami Takeover, and how do you engage attendees in these efforts?

A: Giving back is essential to us; it has become a yearly tradition that our guests look forward to. “Partying with a Purpose” is not just about taking but also serving the community. It gives our guests an incredible feeling.
