Ribbon Cutting for New River Run Park Little Free Library
Dear Residents:
On Friday, August 6th, I celebrated the installation of the community’s newest free “Little Library” with a ribbon cutting at River Run Park. The free-standing book sharing boxes allow neighbors to borrow and contribute books 24/7.
Summer campers, as well as representatives from the River Run, Mirabella, Riverdale, Franklin Farms and Miramar Estates Homeowner’s Associations joined me at the event. Additional locations at Civic Center Place Park and Ansin Sports Complex bring the total number of Little Free Libraries in Miramar to nine. Little Libraries are also located at Fairway Park, Lakeshore Park, Harbour Lakes Park, 19th Street Park, Silver Shores Park, and Vizcaya Park.
What a thrill it is to sponsor the new River Run Park Little Library so more children and families can enjoy the benefits and joy of reading. The City of Miramar is committed to supporting this national book-sharing movement that allows our citizens to share and discover new books.
Women’s Equality Day
August 26, 2021 was proclaimed Women’s Equality Day by the Miramar City Commission.
This day has been celebrated annually on August 26 since 1971 and commemorates the passage of the 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, granting the right to vote to women. In addition to being homemakers, caregivers, mothers and counselors, women also fill critical jobs in every department of our city. On October 7, 2020, I sponsored Ordinance 1763, establishing the Commission on the Status of Women for the City of Miramar named after Ruth Bader Ginsburg (RBG) to identify and resolve economic, health, social, and other issues concerning women’s lives through education and advocacy.
Tennille Erica Decoste was named the Division Director of Civil Rights and Employee/Labor Relations and is responsible for overseeing the RBG Commission on the Status of Women for the City of Miramar to ensure equality on issues women face today in employment, business, health, and family life are addressed. We honor Ms. Decoste for her many contributions and commitment to equality, fairness, and building ladders of opportunities for women in our communities to succeed.
India Independence Day & India Heritage Month
Sajan Kurian on behalf of the South Florida South Asian
Caucus, FOMAA (Federation of Malayalee Association of Americas-Sunshine State Regional Forum) Chief South Florida coordinator, approached the City of Miramar with the idea of a tribute to the South Asian American Indian Diaspora.
I introduced to the commission in 2017 a resolution declaring India Heritage Month in the City of Miramar and the City Commission unanimously approved Resolution R65-32. We welcome the opportunity to promote a greater understanding of various cultures of the world and the 75th anniversary of India’s’ Independence provides an excellent means by which Miramar residents of all backgrounds can recognize the contributions made by the country and people of India and extend best wishes to them on commemorating the historic milestone of Independence.
Jamaica’s 59th Independence
On August 6th, Miramar residents joined the country of Jamaica commemorating the 59th Anniversary of Jamaica’s Independence. A proclamation was issued by the City Commission to commemorate the day. The Jamaican Diaspora continues to excel in every field of endeavor especially at the recent Olympics in Tokyo. Congratulations to all the athletes! We also have more than 10 Jamaican Americans elected to office in Broward County.
Ribbon Cutting at Sherman Circle- Revitalization Project
On Saturday, August 7th, I hosted a Ribbon Cutting Ceremony to commemorate the Sherman Circle Revitalization Project, which commenced in the central Miramar community over 5 years ago. A total of $2.4 million has been dedicated to the project, which includes infrastructure and safety improvements as well as overall beautification enhancements throughout the community.
As part of the project, buffer walls were installed along the south right-of-way of Pembroke Road and also along the north right-of-way of Miramar Boulevard. Anti-litter cans and pet stations were also placed throughout the community. Bernard Park received upgrades including additional lighting and Lakeshore Park received upgrades to the playground, shade structure, pavilion, and landscaping. A bike rack and water fountain were also installed. Streets including Sherman Circle, Bernard Boulevard, Fogg Road, Jodi Lane, Stacey Lane, and other roadways throughout the community were resurfaced. Additionally, the site of the east water treatment plant underwent new landscaping and a new perimeter fence as well as a new generator was installed at the facility.
I am thrilled to see how this project has progressed. It has greatly revitalized the Sherman Circle neighborhood. These improvements contribute to a better quality of life for the wonderful families residing in the community. I also want to extend a special thank you to all of the Adopt-A-Street program volunteers for their dedicated service at the various clean-up events held throughout the year.
